THE EFFECT OF SOCIO-DEMOGRAFIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ELDERLY RESIDING IN REST HOMES AT CENTRAL MANISA ON NUTRITIONAL STATUS

AIM: Aim of our study, is to determine the evaluation of nutritional condition of elderly individuals residing in two rest homes at Centrum Manisa.

Material and Methods: Study is carried out with 71 elderly individuals residing in two rest homes at Centrum Manisa. Data were collected with a survey form includes socio-demographic characteristics and nutrition questions from July to August 2004 Data were collected and analysed by using SPSS 10.0 for Windows. Number-percent, mean, Independent t- tests, chi-square, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskall Wallis and ANOVA, were used for analyses.

Results: Mean (SD) age of the elderly was 70.70±8.01 (min=46 max=84). 60.9% of elderly individuals were male and 39.4% were female. Body mass index of 54.9% elderly individuals were normal.

Conclusion: It was determined that nutritional conditions of elderly individuals were affected some socio-demographic characteristics. Keywords : Elderly, Nutrition, Rest home
