Tarık Z. NURSAL, Erhan HAMALOĞLU
Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Genel Cerrahi Anabilim Dalı- ANKARA In the elderly, increasing dysfunction is observed at the cellular level and organ systems due to the aging process. The diseases which need surgical intervention are less tolerated in this population. The diseases in the gastrointestinal system are generally the result of the aging process itself. The aim of the surgical treatment is to prolong survival as well as to maintain the quality of life which is equally important. Emergency operation and comorbid diseases are more important risk factors than the chronological age for the outcome. in the elderly, gastrointestinal surgery can be performed safely if the comorbid diseases are well controlled.
