This study aimed to investigate the frequency of urinary incontinence(UI), its presenting features and the relationship with daily living activities and psychosocial functions in women living in a rest home. The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) was administered to 500 ambulant subjects by physiatrist in order to select mentally intact people. Among 260 subjects with scores of >=23 and considered mentally intact, 100 residents were randomly selected. of whom 87 were women. The study and control groups were comprised of 26 (%30) and 61 women (%70) with or without UI. respectively. The study and control groups were evaluated with respect to the presence of UI, demografic features and factors associated with / or affecting UI. In the UI group frequency and types of the incontinence. the amount of the urine leakage. its effect on the daily living activities and its severity (by visual analog scale: VAS) were asked. The effect of UI on the psychosocial functions was evaluated by the Incontinence Impact Questionnaire (IIQ). The two groups were compared with respect to all variables. Of 26 women with UI .stress incontinence was! found in %72 (n=18), urge incontinence in %8 (n=2). and mixt type incontinence in %20 (n=6). The number of pelvic operations, respiratory system diseases, frequency of urination (daytime/night). painful urination, dysuria, fullness sensation following urination were found significantly higher in the UI group. Since UI has significant frequency in the elderly, with negative effects on the quality of life, and because conservative and surgical methods can result in successful outcome, UI merits considerable attention with regard to appropriate approach to the patient and its management.
