VITAMIN D SUPPLEMANTATION IN OSTEOPOROSIS

Osteoporosis is not only the most common metabolic bone disease but in fact is one of the most prevalent conditions in the aging population. In Turkey as in many other parts of the world, osteoporosis is a major public health problem. Deterioration in the quality of life due the fractures caused by osteoporosis is an important problem. The main factors of vitamin D deficiency are inadequate dietary intake together with the deficient vitamin D synthesis in the skin due to inadequate sun exposure. Osteoporosis is a major risk factor of hip fractures which in turn a major mortality and morbidity factor in elderly. One year after a fracture only 50% of victims are able to gain mobility among 80% of surviving patients. Although vitamin D has been used for years in osteoporosis treatment, it is controversial in many ways. However vitamin D and its active metabolites are the major drugs in osteoporosis treatment. Some papers suggest that vitamin D treatment is not sufficiently effective, while most of them suggest that 800 IU vitamin D and 1200 mg calcium daily increase the bone production and decrease the incidence of hip fractures in elderly.
