Open Heart Surgery Performed in The Elderly: Risk Factors andResults

During 3rd Oct-1996, Ist March 1998 91 patients over 65 years old were operated at the Cardiovascular Sungery Clinic of Seyhan Hospital. Aorto coronary bypass was performed in 83, anevrysmectomy and aorto coronary bypass in one; aortic valve replacement and aorto coronary bypass 4; mitral valve replacement in 2 patients. 8 patients were died in the early postoperative period. Althougt the inhospital morbidity and mortality are higher than in younger patients age is not an unigue parameter in patient selection. A good anesthetic and surgical management, an intensive care and early mobilization decrease the morbidity and mortality with improved quality of life.
