INFECTIVE ENDOCARDITIS IN ELDERLY
Zonguldak Karaelmas Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Kardiyoloji Anabilim Dalı, ZONGULDAK
Infective endocarditis (IE) in the elderly is increasingly frequent due to especially
health care-associated invasive procedures, prostetic heart valves and
degenerative valve sclerosis which are more common among elderly. A gastrointestinal
source of infection has been described more commonly and group D
Streptococci associated with colonic disease, are an increasingly frequent cause
of IE in elderly patients. Atypical presentations may lead to delayed diagnosis
and older age has been suggested to be associated with poor outcome.
