4Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Fizyoloji Anabilim Dalı İZMİR Introduction: Erythropoietin (Epo) is a molecule which has shown to have neuroprotective effects on animal models of chronic and acute central nervous system disorders like stroke and parkinsonism. Epo shows neuroprotective effect on amiloid beta toxicity in vitro neuronal cell culture. In this study we searched neuroprotective effect of Epo on in vivo animal model of Alzheimer's disease.
Materials and Method: In this study female rats divided into 3 grups like control (sham), ovarectomized and injected 2 ml salin+ 20 mg/day D-galactose, and third grup is injected intraperitoneal 40 mg/kg Epo 3 days per week addition to d-galactose injection. The effects of erythropoietin on the animal model is researched at the hipocampus and cerebral cortex by acetylcholine esterase activity, and apoptosis detection with Cell death ELISA plus kit.
Results: Acetylcholin esterase levels were low in grup Epo is similar to control grup but there is no statistical difference. And there was no statistical difference in 3 grups results about the apoptosis.
Discussion: Epo was not neuroprotective on this animal model of AD. But we did not find any difference at any parameter between control and overectomy+D-galactose group. For this reason, neuroprotective effect of Epo should researched other animal model of AD.
