Gata Kardiyoloji Anabilim Dalı - ANKARA It has been proven that the use of thrombolytic agents in elderly with acute myocardial infarction causes more acute complications than those observed in young patients. Although primary PTCA has become the treatment of choice for acute myocardial infarction, the results of this approach in elderly is still less elucidated. In this study, our aim is to compare the success rate and early results of in-hospital follow-up of primary PTCA in elderly with those in younger patients. The study group and control group included 42 patients with mean age 76,3 ± 9,1 and 41 patients with mean age 54,4 ± 12,3, respectively. Preintervention demographic characteristics, occluded coronary arteries and door-to-needle time otherwise ages were similar between two groups. There were no significant differences in success rate of primary PTCA and in-hospital mortality rates between two groups (p>0,05). Average hospital-stay (p<0,05) and occurrence rate of ventricular arrhythmia requiring therapy (p<0,05) were significantly higher in study group. However, we believe that these differences may not be a challenge or contraindication for the use of primary PTCA in elderly. In conclusion, primary PTCA can be performed safely and successfully in elderly as in young patients. Keywords : Primary PTCA, acute myocardial infarction, elderly patients, ventricular arrhythmia
