STATUS OF MAINTENANCE OF ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING AND EXPERIENCE OF LONELINESS IN ELDER THAN 60 YEARS OLD LIVING AT HOME AND IN INSTITUTIONS

Background: This study was planned to determine the status of continuation of activities of daily living and experience of loneliness in elder than 60 years old living at home and in institutions.

Material and Methods: This study was planned as a descriptive study and was conducted with 210 elderly individuals, 105 living at home and 105 living in an institution. Data were collected for the study using a sociodemographic information form, UCLA Loneliness Scale, Katz's Activities of Daily Living Index and Lawton and Brody's Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Index. Data analysis was conducted using t test, Kruskall Wallis Variance Analysis, Mann Whitney U test.

Results and Conclusion: In the study it was determined that 55.2 % of the elderly living at home were dependent in basic activities of daily living and 11.4 % in instrumental activities of daily living; 50.5 % of the elderly living in an institution were dependent in basic activities of daily living and 14.3 % in instrumental activities of daily living. The loneliness score for the elderly living in an institution was higher than those living at home. Keywords : Elderly individual, Activities of daily living, Loneliness
