CORRELATION BETVVEEN PAIN AND PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOSOCIAL DISABILITY IN ELDERLY OSTEOARTHRITIS PATIENTS

Samsun On Dokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Fiziksel Tıp ve Rehabilitasyon Anabilim Dalı-Samsun The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between pain and physical and psychosocial disability in osteoartritis of elderly patients. Thirty patients who were older than sixty years were included in this study. The Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) was used to assess physical disability. Psychosocial disability was assessed by anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance. An 10 cm visual analog scale was used to assess pain severity. Radiographs were scored according to the Kellgren (1-4). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between physical and psychosocial disability and pain. Physical disability also correlated with anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance. No significant correlation was found between pain and radiographic damage. in elderly patients correlation of pain, physical and psychosocial disability showed that pain was not only originate from physical status, but it may also be influenced by social and emotional factors.
