Aim: In this study it was aimed to evaluate the distribution of operations for malignancies in a surgical clinic and to clarify the effects of age and sex on this subject.

Materials and Method: Medical records of the patients who underwent surgery for malignancies during the last five years were evaluated. Patients were divided into two groups according to their age, as above and below 65 years. Age, sex and type of malignancies were recorded for analyses.

Results: During the last five years 9436 operations were performed. There were total of 1137 (415M) patients with malignancies with the average age of 61 (17-87) years. Breast cancer was the most common cancer among women and 86% of patients were in younger group. It's incidence was not increasing with age. Colorectal and gastric carsinomas were a other common malignancies in this group. 33% of the male patients were over the 65 years group. The commonest malignancies in the male group were colorectal and gastric cancers. Although the incidence of colorectal cancers were increasing with age, gastric cancers usually were seen in younger group.

Conclusion: Elderly cancer patients are likely to have comorbidities at diagnosis. Since this subset of the population expands, a special attention should be paid for this group and attempts for early diagnosis should be carried out. Keywords : Elderly, Cancer, Surgery
