Drug Use in the Elderly

Polypharmacy causes more side effects and adverse drug reactions in old population. It also effects duration of hospitalization and recovery time. Here we have studied and compared 207 old people with a former same based study that is done in 1988 with 106 people. Drug consumption rate is 84 % in new study while the former rate was 90 %. Most consumed drug groups are analgesics-antiinflamatory drugs, cardiovascular system drugs, endocrin-metabolism drugs consecutively. Although the drug consumption rate has declined a little compared with 10 years before, this difference was not found to be significant. In this study it is emphasized that the necessity of rationalization of drug consumption with collabaration of clinicians pharmacists. Keywords : Geriatric population, Drug use
