Motor and Sensory Nerve Conduction Studies in Healthy and Elderly Cases
Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Fiziksel Tıp ve Rehabilitasyon Anabilim Dalı- İSTANBUL
Age is an important factor which influences nevre conduction studies. We assessed 30 healthy volunteers (min-max age; 50-70, age range 58.2±7.3). We investigated motor and sensory nerve conduction studies of the median and unlar nerves in upper extremities, and motor conduction studies of the deep peroneal, posterior tibial nerves and sural nerve conduction studies in lower extremities. We evaluated also distal latency and amplitudes. We combined these parameters with healthy, younger cases statistically. As a result, we found statistically significant prolongation in conduction velocities of median and unlar motor nerves, and peronal, posterior tibial and sural nerves; and delay in distal latencies of these nerves (p<0.05). However, we did not found any difference in nerve conduction velocities and distal latencies of median and unlar sensory nerves. In addition, we did not establish significant decrease in amplitudes.
