EVALUATION OF FAMILY HEALTH, SOCIAL NETWORK STATUS AND PERCEIVED FAMILY SUPPORT SYSTEMS OF A GROUP OF 65 YEARS AND OLDER ELDERLY INDIVIDUALS
Ege Üniversitesi Hemşirelik Yüksekokulu İç Hastalıkları Hemşireliği Anabilim Dalı, İZMİR Aim: This research was planned for the purpose of evaluating a group of 65 years and older elderly individuals' family health, social networks, and perceived family support systems.

Material and Methods: This descriptive type of research was conducted between 1-30 September 2002 at the Medical Outpatient Clinics of Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital. The 75 elderly individuals who presented themselves to this clinic were included in the research sample. The research data were collected using a Questionnaire, Family Health Assessment Tool, Social Network List, and Perceived Family Support Scale. Data, which were collected using the face-to-face interview method, were evaluated with the SPSS program using number and percentage distribution, student's t test and variance analysis.

Results: In the general evaluation of the research data it was determined that the mean age of the elderly individuals was 71.79+6.97 years, their family health was good, they had small social networks, and their family support was good.

Conclusion: New models for, services in older people's needs are recommended to be developed. Keywords : Elderly, Family health, Social network, Family support
