Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Kardiyoloji Anabilim Dalı, SİVAS
Starting with the first implantation of pacemakers (PM) in 1958 for the
treatment of bradyarrhythmias, their use is rapidly increasing due to the advancement
in PM technology and the enlargement of their indications. At present,
more than 80% of PM applications is performed on the elderly patients over
65 years old. Facing with the enlargement of the indications, especially in the
elderly patients, it is still controversial which mode the most appropriate is,
whether PMs influence morbidity and mortality rates in various indications, and
for the issues of ethical economical gains. Because, contradictory data are obtained
from the studies investigating these issues. This review plans to evaluate
the PM therapy in elderly patients in full detail.
