3Serbest Hekim ANKARA Introduction: The long-term success and complications of horizontal eyelid shortening surgery in the treatment of involutional entropion was investigated.
Materials and Method: Medical records of 54 patients with involutional lower eyelid entropion that underwent surgical repair between January 2001 and 2009 were retrospectively reviewed.
Results: Patients were divided into three groups based on surgical procedures performed. Group 1 patients (n= 20) underwent the Wies procedure, Group 2 patients (n=23) underwent the Quickert procedure, and Group 3 patients (n=19) underwent a combined procedure of lateral tarsal strip (LTS), transvers blepharotomy and everting suture. The mean ages of groups were 77.35±5.98, 80.47±6.20, and 79.26±4.56 years, respectively. Recurrence rate of group 1 was 5% (n=1). No recurrence was seen in group 2 or 3. Ectropion was encountered in two patients in group 1. In group 2, one patient developed a granuloma and two patients had corneal epithelial erosions. No complication was detected in group 3.
Conclusion: In the treatment of involutional entropion, horizontal eyelid shortening, especially surgical procedures combined with LTS, not only increase the success rate but also reduce the postoperative development of consecutive ectropion and other complications.
