GERIATRIC DAY HOSPITAL
Gaziosmanpaşa Üniversitesi Fiziksel Tıp ve Rehabilitasyon Anabilim DalıHacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Fiziksel Tıp ve Rehabilitasyon Anabilim Dalı, Ankara Functional status in the older person is characterized by the gradual decreases in organ function that accompany normal aging and more rapid declines associated with acute and chronic illness. Assessment of the impact of aging and illness on an individual's physical, emotional and social function is critical in providing appropriate health care. In today's society, the special needs of the elderly are being recognized and various solutions are being proposed to meet these needs. For older persons who present with complex health problems and functional decline, day hospitals may provide an environment for prevention of certain diseases and disability, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and rehabilitation. Interdisciplinary team approach that incorporates input from many different specialties or fields, including physical and occupational therapy, social services and psychiatry is essential. Discharge of patients from inpatient services might be easier with the use of day hospital services and this may prevent the problems of the elderly patients after discharge. The elderly patient should be provided information and materials to enable him or her to participate in self-management of chronic disease. A program for screening and treating functional disabilities should be incorporated. An interdisciplinary team approach to care must be available. In addition to medical care, patient's psychological, social and functional needs should be assessed. Keywords : geriatric day hospital, elderly, disability, prevention
