Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Kardiyoloji Anabilim Dalı, TRABZON Old population in the world gradually increases. With aging, cardiovascular (CV) diseases are more frequent. Atherosclerosis is the most important pathologic event among CV diseases. Hyperlipidemia is one of the most important risk factor for developing atherosclerosis. It was shown that risk for developing CV diseases is reduced with lipid lowering treatments. Hyperlipidemia therapy is also beneficial in older people as well as in young ones. However, older people have more distinct characteristics than old people have. Physiologic variables in lipid profiles may occur with getting older. Recent randomized controlled trials shown that lipid lowering therapies have beneficial effects on older people, although previous studies did not enrolled old people. In current guidelines, lipid lowering therapies are recommended for prevention and treatment of CV diseases whithout taking age edge into account. However, there are some deliberate concerns about the safey of lipid-lowering agents. According to studies, drug therapy administration up to 75 years seems to be safe and beneficial. Prospective, randomized clinical trials enrolling older peoole more than 80 years-old and big sample size are needed to be conducted in recent days. Keywords : Aged; Hyperlipidemia
