THE RELATIONSHIP AMONG HIP AXIS LENGTH, FEMUR BONE MINERAL DENSITY AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY

The aim of this study was to assess the relationship among hip axis length, proximal femur bone mineral density and physical characteristics.
1135 female and 454 male (total n= 1589) subjects were included in this study. The height and weight of the subjects were recorded. Proximal femur bone mineral density (femur neck, ward’s trochanter and femur total bone mineral density) and hip axis length was measured with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Mean and standart deviation of hip axis length results were 104.1± 6.7 mm in females, 120.3± 8.1mm in males. According to the statistical analysis the strongest relationship was found between hip axis length and height of the subjects, the weakest relationship was found between hip axis length and age of the subjects. Results indicated that hip axis length is found to be longer in taller subjects and people who have low Ward’s bone mineral density and fracture risk can be higher according to normal population.
