ARE THERE PREVENTIVE FACTORS IN ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE? PART: I. ANTIOXIDANTS, NON-STEROÄ°D ANTI-INFLAMATORY DRUGS, ESTROGEN AND STATINS
Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Nöroloji Anabilim Dalı, ANKARA As the proportion of elderly people in the population increases, Alzheimer's disease will become an enormous public health problem. Interventions that could delay the onset of the disease, even modestly, would therefore have a major impact on public health. Interventions that would postpone the onset of clinical Alzheimer's disease by 5 years would decrease the prevalence of the disease by 50%. Consequently, strategies for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease are important.Medications to slow or delay progression of Alzheimer's disease, which may also be useful in prevention, include antioxidants, antiinflamatory drugs, estrogen and statins. In the first part of this review, the preventive effects of antioxidants, non-steroid anti- inflamatory drugs, estrojen and statins will be discussed under the light of the recent literature.
